Scope of this Standard

This standard applies to flexible hoses with a rated pressure of not less than 1.7 MPa (250 psig), used in fuel supply systems intended for domestic LP Gas (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) cooking appliances, operating at less than 0.007 MPa (1 psi). NOTE LP Gas (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) systems primarily use Department of Transport DOT-4BA cylinders (which are supplied by the National Petroleum Marketing Company Ltd.) and are intended to be installed in accordance with the United States LPG Code (National Fire Protection Agency, NFPA 58). Flexible hoses with connectors are used to connect gas regulators and domestic cooking appliances. This standard does not apply to: a) Low pressure flexible hoses with a rated pressure of 0.007 MPa (1 psig) or less; b) Gas appliance connectors for handling fuel gases at 0.035 MPa (5 psig); c) Flexible hose used for engine fuel applications; d) Flexible hose for use in confined areas; and e) Hose connectors for portable outdoor gas-fired appliances. NOTE 1 LP (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is typically stored at a high pressure of 0.84 MPa (120 psig) which is reduced by the cylinder regulator to a low pressure of 0.0035 MPa (0.5 psig) for supply to the cooking appliance. In the event of regulator failure however, the connector must be capable of withstanding the high pressure gas in the cylinder. This standard therefore only allows the use of high pressure connectors to provide an additional layer of safety in the event of gas regulator failure. NOTE 2 Gas appliance connectors for fuel gases at 0.035 MPa (5 psig) are covered by ANSI Z21.24 Standard for metal connectors for gas appliances. Flexible hose connectors for engine fuel applications are covered under UL 1786, LP-Gas Fuel Hose and Hose Assemblies for Vehicle Engines. Hose connectors used in portable outdoor gas-fired appliances are covered under ANSI Z21.54, Hose connectors for portable outdoor gas fired appliances. NOTE 3 Gas cylinders and flexible supply hoses should not be stored in a closed cupboard. They can be used in a ventilated kitchen.
